SOCIAL CHANGE AND CULTURAL IDENTITY IN MOIRANG TOWN, MANIPUR: A STUDY OF CONTINUITY AND TRANSFORMATION

Abstract

Moirang, one of the most historically and culturally significant towns of Manipur, occupies a unique place in the socio-cultural landscape of Northeast India. Known for its association with the ancient Moirang Kingdom, the Khamba-Thoibi legend, the INA (Indian National Army) Memorial, and the rich traditions of Meitei culture, Moirang has undergone substantial social and cultural transformations over time. The forces of modernization, urbanization, globalization, education, migration, and technological advancement have reshaped the social structure and cultural practices of the town. Despite these changes, Moirang continues to preserve its distinctive cultural identity through traditional festivals, rituals, performing arts, and community institutions. This paper examines the processes of social change and cultural continuity in Moirang Town and explores how local communities negotiate tradition and modernity in the contemporary era. The study is based on secondary sources, including books, journal articles, census reports, government publications, and scholarly research available up to 2022.
