SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND CONSERVATION APPROACHES: AN ANALYTICAL ASSESSMENT

Abstract

Natural resources constitute the fundamental basis of human survival, economic development and ecological stability. Forests, water, land, minerals, biodiversity and energy resources provide essential inputs for agriculture, industry, livelihoods and human settlements. However, rapid population growth, urbanisation, industrialisation, agricultural expansion, increasing consumption and inappropriate patterns of resource utilisation have placed considerable pressure on natural ecosystems. The degradation of natural resources has resulted in deforestation, soil erosion, groundwater depletion, biodiversity loss, pollution and deterioration of ecosystem services. Against this background, the present study examines the concept of sustainable natural resource management and evaluates major conservation approaches from an analytical perspective. The study is based exclusively on secondary information obtained from books, peer-reviewed research papers, government publications and reports of international organisations published up to 2017. The study analyses sustainable utilisation, forest conservation, water management, biodiversity conservation, land management, community participation, renewable energy and environmental governance as major approaches to natural resource conservation. The analysis suggests that effective conservation requires an integrated approach combining ecological sustainability with economic efficiency and social participation. Community-based resource management, institutional cooperation, technological development and appropriate regulatory mechanisms can significantly improve conservation outcomes. The study concludes that sustainable management of natural resources is essential not only for environmental protection but also for livelihood security, economic development and intergenerational equity.
