USE OF MOBILE PHONES FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Abstract

Mobile phones have become an important part of university students’ academic life. Earlier, mobile phones were mainly used for calling and messaging, but now they are used for online classes, searching study material, reading e-books, accessing learning apps, communicating with teachers, joining academic groups, preparing assignments, and submitting academic work. The present study focuses on the use of mobile phones for academic purposes among university students. It highlights how mobile phones support flexible learning, quick access to information, communication, collaboration, and self-study. At the same time, the study also considers problems such as distraction, excessive screen time, social media use, lack of concentration, and unequal access to internet facilities. Mobile learning is now seen as an important part of higher education because it connects formal classroom learning with informal learning outside the classroom. However, mobile phones should be used in a balanced and responsible manner so that they improve academic performance rather than disturb study habits. The study concludes that mobile phones can be useful academic tools when students use them mainly for educational activities and when universities provide proper guidance for their effective use.
